After car maintenance, I headed to Needham to pick up my broken Xerox Phaser 3400. Since I was a good part of the distance to there already, I went down to the Cape Cod canal today. The idea was to make new pictures of the three bridges.
Of over 50 shots, the best one I got was of the Sagamore Bridge, from the eastern side of the Canal, looking north.
While I tried to replicate my old 1986 Rail Bridge image, I failed. There are two reasons for this.
That made me use too short a lens much too close to the bridge. The image isn't bad, but it’s not what I wanted, so I consider it a failure.
If I really want to be that way, I’ll bring the Canon with me and try again some time. But why bother? I’ve still got the original image, and the site appears to have changed a bit. Why in hell did they put that darn pole there??? What really gets me is that it looks like it’s been there a while, too. Wasn’t there 20 years ago!
None of the rest of the images are of particular interest.

I went to a new local science fiction convention and took pictures.
I found Sara M. Harvey, whose book I’m just about done with now. I really like this book. It’s not science fiction. It’s more a contemporary romance crossed with fantasy, if that’s not redundant.
I also got this image, which I continue to play with. The next day, she wore striped stockings, but none of those images worked out well.
One of the ladies at the convention bought these slippers. They appear to be available on-line if you’re interested.

Yesterday (Tuesday), I got out and hiked around Mount Tom a bit. Took pictures, of course.
After leaving the Mount Tom state park, I headed north on US 5. Passing the Delany House in Holyoke, I saw something about a car show on Tuesday evenings. Hey wait, said I. This is Tuesday evening!
So I turned around and went in to see what I might see.
I’ve also got a new idea for the layout of this page. It’s a bit more complicated, but it would load all the images for a particular entry with one click. Maybe I’ll do it just for grins.

Let’s get this going again. Besides the pics I’ve been posting at my Scotland site, here are pics since the end of last August.
You ever notice how you can suddenly focus into something to the exclusion of everything else? Got this pic before mall security came by.
On Saturday (2006-07-29), I got this pic and this pic. And no issues with mall cops.
I rather like the stickers on this car I saw on 2006-07-24 or so.
On 2006-07-23 or thereabouts, I caught this optimist. I know she’s an optimist. Just look at her smiling at the blue sky of her dreams.
On 2006-07-07, I saw... well, see for yourself.
On 2005-11-04, I found these.

Today I visited the glass workers in Shelburne Falls. They're fun to watch.

Many, many moons ago (1982-1983), I did a year at Northeastern University. It was fun, it was expensive, it gave me a year in Boston, and it was even educational in a number of directions. I took a lot of pictures. For instance, I took many pictures of Copley Place while it was under construction.
Anyway, the point is that I had this roommate (sorry, no picture) who was from Rockport, Massachusetts. I'd never heard of the place. He told me of a building he called "motif #1" and said that everyone took pictures of it. Ooookay. Tourists do things like that, I was thinking, and didn't think about it much.
Some time around 1995, when I was living in Hudson, Massachusetts, I took a drive over there, just to see what he was talking about.
If I remember correctly (IIRC), it was a late summer day, so the town was rather busy, but not too crowded. I wandered around until I found what he'd been talking about. Of course, I had to take a picture of it, though I don't think I really "saw" what the big deal was.
Okay, I lied. I took six pictures of it, just in case. Hey, long before then, I'd taken some (3 semesters of photo class [which means I didn’t major in it], yay prof!) photographic training, so I knew to take lots of shots of something, just in case.
The point is that I was just recently Googling "Motif #1" to explain it to a friend, and I discovered that the original shack had been blown down in 1978! By the time I heard about the thing in 1982, a replacement had been in place for years, but it was a replacement. So by the time I actually got around to taking a picture of it, well, it was an old replacement. So much the better... I guess.
Brian, if you mentioned the replacement to me at the time, that factoid did not stick. Oh well. BTW, was that you I saw in the store that day?

Tonight, I went to see Lois McMaster Bujold at the Flights of Fantasy bookstore in Loudenville, NY. Of course, I took pictures.
There was a Q & A session. Lois endured it happily. After all, if we're still there, we're still interested!
And we were! I think there were just enough chairs for all, and certainly no spares, especially given the loud gamers near by. We asked question after question. I asked Lois what software she uses, since she said she writes using a computer. Her answer was “Microsoft Word for Windows”.
After the Q & A session, Lois signed books. Lots and lots of books. Marion stood over her to make sure she got them all. We bought signed books, which made Marion happy.
Toward the end, Lois seemed to get a little tired. Maybe she was tired of having the flash in her face. Maybe it'd just been a long day. So I desisted.

I just finished scanning my entire library of negatives. I went from mid-May, when I got my new CanoScan 9950F, to 3 or 4 July 2005. For a while now, "recent" may not be so recent. In fact, I can think of one image that's from no later than 1957, though I didn't actually take that one, I only inherited it.
On the other hand, there's a picture I just took yesterday.
I took pictures of the UMass Amherst fireworks on Monday too. Using fairly long exposures (1/2sec and 1.0sec) with a tripod, I got a number of effects, such as spheres, and more spheres.
Note that the links on this page are very likely to change as I move in new images. Also, the text and images are copyright 2005, Howard S Shubs. Please do NOT steal my images. If you want to use them, contact me and we'll figure something out.
